The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every
year on October 17 throughout the world. It was first observed in the
year 1987 at Paris, France where 100,000 people gathered on the Human
Rights and Liberties Plaza at the Trocadéro to honour victims of
poverty, hunger, violence and fear. But it was officially recognised by
the United Nations in 1992 under resolution 47/196 of December 22, 1992.
One of the main aims of the day is to make the voice of the poor heard. To this end, commemorations often include testimonies from people living in poverty, describing their own experiences or those of people they know. Various non-government organizations and community charities organise different types of events to raise the voice towards this issue.
