Martyrs’ Day 2017: Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru’s sacrifice remembered on Shaheed Diwas
Martyrs’ Day which is observed on
March 23 is also knowns as Shaheed Diwas or Sarvodaya Day. On this days,
Indians pay homage to three martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the
country. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru are
remembered on this day and homages are paid to the freedom fighters for
the contribution to the freedom struggle of India. The revolutionaries
were hanged to death for not obeying the orders of Britishers and
demanding freedom from them. Shaheed Diwas honors the ultimate sacrifice
made the men that contributed in Indian getting freedom from alien
forces. Martyrs Day is observed on various days in the country. January
30 is also observed as Shaheed Diwas as Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated
on the day.
The Lahore high court today passed
orders to ensure security to those who want to observe the 86th
martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, at the Bhagat Singh
Memorial Foundation. The event is observed every year at Shadman Chowk
in Lahore, Pakistan as the three men were hanged there on March 23,
1931. Various other events paying tributes to the national heroes have
been arranged in the national capital for March 23, 2017.

All the three revolutionaries were arrested on murder charges which
gained national momentum. They were sentenced to death in the Lahore
conspiracy case and were hanged to death on March 23, 1931, at 7.30 pm
in the Lahore jail. Their bodies were cremated on the banks of the
Sutlej River. Bhagat Singh who attained martyrdom at an age of 23
became an inspiration for generations to come. He became the face of
nationalism and hero figure in the eyes of Indians.
