Navy Day-India/ Chemical Disaster Prevention Day


Chemical Disaster Prevention Day is observed every year on 4th December to emphasize the importance of chemical safety.


Exactly 32 years ago, of 03rd December 1984 (around 01.00Hrs) The Bhopal disaster, considered as the world's worst industrial disaster took place at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The accident happened due to the leakage of about 40 Tons of MIC (Methyl Iso Cynate) within half an hour into the atmosphere. It is estimated that over 3,000 were left dead and some 2,50,000 with permanent disabilities. Some of the families were completely wiped out, in many cases without any record and with no death certificates. A partial count some few months later showed 159 orphaned children, 169 widows, some 1,000 cases of permanent total blindness and 2,300 pregnant women in need of care and continuous monitoring. This terrible accident, which happened at the Union Carbide’s Pesticide plant in their Golden Jubilee year (the Indian Company was established in 1934), brought a tragic end to a year of celebrations. The plant is no more in business now. It is the responsibility of one and all to learn from this un-forgetful lesson and ensure safety to protect People, Equipment, Machinery and Environment.
